Project Overview

🛰️ Background:

The Museum of Flight is the largest independent, non-profit air and space museum in the world, dedicated to preserving aviation history and inspiring future generations.

In June 2024, the museum launched Home Beyond Earth, an immersive, interactive exhibition designed to explore the human experience of living in space. The exhibit featured five interactive kiosks ("Waypoints"), allowing visitors to engage with space station simulations, career pathways, and community-building activities through touchscreens and RFID-enabled experiences.

⁉️ Problem Statement:

During the pilot usability testing, multiple usability challenges were identified across the five interactive kiosks:

  1. Lack of clarity on kiosk purpose – Visitors struggled to understand why the kiosks existed and how they contributed to the overall exhibit.
  2. Scattered interaction points – Without a structured flow, users felt lost moving between kiosks, leading to disengagement.
  3. Onboarding gap – There was no intuitive way to introduce visitors to the interactive experience upon exhibit entry.
  4. Accessibility concerns – Given that the target audience included both older adults and children, optimizing usability for these two groups was critical.

🎯 Goal:

Enhance visitor engagement with the digital kiosks by improving wayfinding, usability, accessibility, and interactivity, ensuring a seamless and intuitive experience for all age groups.
